Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

PLAR or mPLAR (Mature PLAR since students need to be in their 18th year or older) is a formal evaluation and credit granting process whereby students may obtain credits for prior learning. This includes knowledge and skills that students have acquired in both formal and informal ways, outside of secondary school.

 

Who is Eligible for PLAR?

Mature students who:

  • are turning 18 before August 31 of the current school year
  • enroll in a credit program for the purpose of obtaining a Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
  • started high school in Ontario in 1999 or later and are returning as an adult
  • started or completed high school outside Ontario but want to obtain an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

Grade 9 / 10 Assessment and Equivalency Process

A maximum of 16 Grade 9 and 10 equivalent credits can be granted through written assessment in one of the following subject areas.

  • English
  • Geography/ History
  • Math
  • Science

Grade 11 and 12 Equivalency Credits

A guidance counsellor will review how your life and work experience match current high school courses. Equivalent credits may be granted through the successful completion of the process where your work and life experience relates directly to Ontario curriculum expectations.
